Thanksgiving menu
I am trying to work on this menu with an eye towards things that will make really good leftovers. I want to plan a leftovers party for the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I should probably get invites out for that. lolz
Anyway, here's the menu thus far:
Pumpkin martinis
Local autumnal beer
Mulled wine
Sparkling cider
crudite in this shape or
possibly this turkey shaped cheese ball, as it seems something Char would like to make
Waldorf salad (made by my mom)
Spiral ham, maybe like this, def something with pinapple
Baked mac and cheese, likely Pioneer Woman's recipe. I have another one, on paper, that uses velveeta.
Brussel sprouts (made by my mom, she's still deciding on method of cooking)
Classic green bean casserole
Honey Cornbread
Classic mashed potatoes with lots of butter, sour cream, cream, maybe a little bit of cheese

Platter of fresh fruit

This week's learnings & haps (Unit 1, Week 6) Social Studies & Language Arts
This week, we're hitting colonization in North America and the Revolutionary War. We'll go over the basics and then concentrate on the unheard stories of women and people of color during this time.
For language arts, we'll review the last few weeks and also learn about prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. Woot!

Uh oh
It occurred to me today that I am already slipping into early stages of my own personal version of seasonal depression.
I am avoiding:
~phone calls (from creditors, but also from friends, family and my homeschool volunteer work)
~working on my social calendar
~talking to my friends, in person and on the phone
~talking to my mother
~making medical appointments
~sorting the mail
Fuuuuuck.
We are also broke as all hell, yet again. Ugh, it's like treading water. Rob and I had a rare (lately) alone outing to Target today with a very strict (as in, the last of the money in the checking acct until Thursday) food budget. We did well---we won't starve. But kitty really needs to get to the vet and the money simply isn't there. My mother very sweetly handed me $100 last week for vet care and I spent it on gas and food last week. :( I'm so ashamed---this is why I am not taking her calls.
Ick, blech, blah.
Ok, things I am still doing well:
~homeschool planning. Our academic work is going really well actually and I'm really enjoying it.
~housework. The house is in pretty good shape, for the most part. I've never been much of a housecleaner but with the exception of the paperwork/bills, I'm staying on top of things.
~cooking. Lack of $$ I guess contributes. We are buying nutrient-rich foods that take some time and effort to prep. This is good all around, really.
~working. My job is at least a few hours where I can go and not feel like "omg, I should be doing XYZ!!!!!!"

This week's learnings & haps (Unit 1, Week 4)
We have one hs group outing this week and that is a class on orienteering at Cornell Cooperative Extension. I'm offering it to all three kids but we'll see if picky eldest gets into it.
The academics:
Reading
We've not being doing as well with my outline for reading, but both the girls are voracious readers and they read for pleasure several times every day. I wanted to do weekly read-alouds for each so they could work on presentation, enunciation and projecting their voices but we simply have let that part of each week's assignments slide. I'm ok with that, to be honest. It's something we can do if/when we have the time. The plan was to use the short stories from the Core Knowledge books because they are cannon classics. But, again, no major issues if those don't happen each week. The kids should get their scripts for Hansel and Gretel this week, so we can start working on their lines for that production.
Spelling & Vocabulary
Just the regular workbook pages. Nothing exciting, just rudimentary stuff.
Math
Char: Fact Families. We'll do workbook pages and play some online games:
Online game
Online game with multiplication and division
Emma: Large number addition & subtraction; Estimation.
Explanation of Calculation vs. Estimation done like PC vs Mac:
Language Arts
Review Subject and Predicate:
Verbs!
And direct objects!
No great video for this. We'll just go over it in the books. :) This page has a pretty good basic definition and lots of examples.
Writing
This week we'll talk about adding details to our personal narratives. We'll work on editing and adding to the narratives the girls wrote about their trips to Disney, as well as complete their pages in the workbooks on this topic.
Social Studies
Ancient Eastern Woodland Peoples
We'll use the Build Our Nation textbook for a brief overview of the Native Americans of the East. This site has a lot of great info to look through and enjoy.
Women's dance of the Tuscarora Nation
Our Tuesday visit to the library will include picking up some books on a Native Nation of the girls choice so we can learn more.
Science
Fish!
We've got text books to read and we'll watch some episodes of The Blue Planet and get some books from the library. The girls will each pick a specific kind of fish that interests them and do a small report, to be presented to the family Friday night.
Art & Music
We'll watch and listen to some music of the Eastern Woodland People. We'll also be doing some crafting for the harvest season, like leaf preserving, paper bag tree making, and working on our Samain season altars. We'll also make our first batch of Amish Friendship bread.
Health & Phys Ed
Uh, we'll play outside? And continue doing morning yoga and afternoon dancing-while-cooking. Read more "This week's learnings & haps (Unit 1, Week 4)..."
